Milan M1. Works begin on the Bisceglie - Parri - Baggio - Olmi extension

21 minutes from Olmi to Duomo, 7.5 million passengers, 3,500 tonnes less CO₂

Milano, 23 February 2026 – On Wednesday 25 February, works will begin on the extension of the M1 metro line from Bisceglie to Baggio, a 3.3-kilometre fully underground հատված with three new stations – Parri-Valsesia, Baggio and Olmi – that will extend the Red Line towards the south-western outskirts of Milan, also serving surrounding municipalities.

“In terms of number of residents, this area is second only to the Brianza district,” explained Marco Granelli, Councillor for Public Works. “It includes the densely populated neighbourhoods of Baggio, Valsesia, Olmi, Muggiano and Mengoni (Parco dei Fontanili), as well as the neighbouring municipalities of Cesano Boscone, Settimo Milanese and Cusago, in addition to the connection between State Road 114 and the ring road for vehicles entering the city from Cisliano, Albairate and Abbiategrasso. Considering only residents within a 1,500-metre radius of the three stations, the catchment area amounts to approximately 60,000 people who, thanks to the M1 extension, will be brought closer to the city: from Olmi to Duomo it will take 21 minutes, covering 8.8 kilometres in a straight line – the same distance as from Duomo to Molino Dorino, currently the metro station furthest from the city centre.”

Passengers using the three new M1 stations are expected to total 7.5 million per year,” added Arianna Censi, Councillor for Mobility, “with significant time savings for commuters as well as a reduction in traffic across the entire area. The new section will lead to a reduction of 14.8 million vehicle-kilometres in private road traffic, 85% of which relates to cars. There will also be 3.5 million additional metro journeys per year. To promote sustainable mobility, cycle routes to the stations will also be enhanced. The environmental benefits are equally significant: a net total saving of over 3,500 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year.”

The works will be carried out by a Temporary Consortium of Companies composed of Eteria Consorzio Stabile (with executing consortia members Vianini Lavori, Itinera and I.CO.P.), Ghella and C.M.B. Società Cooperativa, for a total value of €362 million funded by the Italian Government and the Municipality of Milan. Construction supervision will be undertaken by MM S.p.A., which has overseen all phases of the project, acts as contracting authority and coordinates safety. The expected construction timeframe is approximately five and a half years, plus testing, and includes the three stations and five ancillary structures (Parri, Valsesia, Castrovillari, Mosca and Pertini).

The M1 extension will start from the current turn-back track at Bisceglie station and will be built almost entirely using TBM (“tunnel boring machine”) technology to minimise surface impact in the affected neighbourhoods. The TBM will excavate from west towards the city centre; it will be launched from the Pertini structure site (in Via Cusago, outside the western ring road) and extracted once it reaches the Parri structure, near Bisceglie.

The three stations will be built at a depth of approximately 16 metres, while excavation depths for stations and structures will range from -12 to -24 metres at the Valsesia structure. The project also stands out for the use of innovative solutions, including cutting-edge fire prevention technologies and the adoption of BIM (Building Information Modeling). BIM enables an integrated and comprehensive view of the project, not only in terms of physical construction, but also in analysing environmental impact and managing the infrastructure’s life cycle.

With the new section, the entire Line 1 will extend to 43 stations over approximately 32 kilometres.

Parri station will feature a northern entrance on Via Valsesia, providing access from the neighbourhood of the same name, and a southern entrance on Via Parri, within the green area of Parco dei Fontanili between the shopping centre and the Via Luigi Mengoni district, about 650 metres from the centre of Cesano Boscone, enabling residents of the municipality to easily access the metro. Baggio station will be located behind the Poste Italiane building. Olmi station, in addition to serving the neighbourhood, will be approximately 900 metres from the centre of Muggiano, bringing it closer to the city through pedestrian and cycling connections.

The surface redevelopment project associated with the construction of the new M1 includes a major public green and environmental regeneration programme near the new stations, with tree planting, removal of paved surfaces and soil de-sealing interventions. The aim is to transform the areas surrounding the new stations into accessible, vibrant and liveable public spaces for the entire neighbourhood and community, rather than merely transit and service areas for metro users.

Accordingly, near Parri, Baggio and Olmi stations, the project includes the creation of playgrounds and equipped areas, wooded and landscaped green areas with new trees and shrubs, additional plantings along the entire route, as well as approximately 108,000 square metres of lawns. Covered bicycle racks will be installed and landscaped green berms created to mitigate noise.

Near each station, three new parks will also be developed, measuring 2,500 sqm, 8,700 sqm and over 1.5 hectares respectively. In particular, Olmi Park will also have a sports vocation, featuring basketball courts, a skate park, a running track, outdoor fitness equipment and a climbing wall, thanks to the complete renovation of the AICS Olmi Sports Centre.
